You’re sitting there, coffee in hand, pondering over a question that’s been nagging at you lately: “Is it too late to start an online business at 40?” Let me tell you, you’re not alone in this boat. The digital age has brought a revolution, making it seem like the entrepreneurial world is a young person’s game. But here’s the kicker: it’s not.
But here’s the thing: that voice is a lying sack of, well, you get the picture.
Sure, starting an online business at 40 might not be the same as launching a tech startup fresh out of college. But guess what? It also doesn’t come with the same anxieties and pitfalls. You’ve got a few decades of life under your belt, a toolbox brimming with experiences, and a whole lot less FOMO (fear of missing out) than your younger counterparts.
Let’s dive into some facts. Did you know that the average age of successful entrepreneurs is actually around 45? Yes, you read that right. According to a study by the American Census Bureau and MIT, the most successful founders are middle-aged. This revelation shatters the stereotype of the young tech whiz who makes it big before 30.
The truth is, the average age of successful entrepreneurs is closer to 40 than 20. Studies show that founders between the ages of 40 and 60 are more likely to build high-growth businesses. Think about it: you’ve got the skills, the network, and the wisdom that comes from, well, living life. You’ve seen the boom-and-bust cycles, the rise and fall of trends, and you know what it takes to actually make something work.
You might be wondering, “What advantages do I have starting at 40?” Well, let me tell you, there are quite a few.
By 40, you’ve gathered a wealth of experience and wisdom that can’t be taught in any business school. You’ve seen the ups and downs of life, learned from your mistakes, and developed resilience. This life experience is invaluable when navigating the unpredictable waters of entrepreneurship.
Chances are, by this age, you’re more financially stable than you were in your 20s. This stability allows you to take calculated risks without jeopardizing your entire livelihood. It’s a safety net that many young entrepreneurs don’t have.
Over the years, you’ve built a network of contacts. These relationships can be a goldmine for your business, providing support, advice, and potential partnerships.
At 40, you know yourself better. You understand what drives you and what you’re passionate about. This clarity and sense of purpose are crucial in guiding your business decisions and keeping you motivated.

A very inspiring article for anyone looking at starting an online business over 40. Great examples given and I’ll add one more to that, colonel Sanders! He was in his 60’s before his now famous KFC got franchiser. So if your only in your 40’s with a little grey on you, who cares, just get started!
The breakdown of how to get started and what to do is also very useful and make it a little less daunting. Great post!
The example of Colonel Sanders is actually a brilliant one, showing that it is not too late to start an online business. Thanks Ryan. Great going!
This article about starting an online business at 40 is incredibly inspiring and debunking a common misconception. I truly appreciate how it addresses the age myth associated with entrepreneurship. Have you encountered any personal experiences or success stories of individuals who began their online businesses later in life? I believe sharing these real-life examples could further motivate those hesitant due to their age.
I’ve personally witnessed the power of digital platforms to level the playing field. It’s impressive how the online space allows for diverse opportunities and flexibility. The article rightly emphasizes the importance of leveraging one’s experience and skills, regardless of age. Have you found any specific resources or communities that provide support and guidance tailored to older entrepreneurs entering the online business world? Sharing such insights could be immensely beneficial for those seeking a supportive network. Thank you for shedding light on this empowering perspective!
Thanks, Pasindu for your comments. You’re quite right. The Internet truly levels the playing field and presents a wide range of opportunities for anyone to make money online and start a business at any age.
In terms of resources targeting specifically people over 40, the best one I would say is Wealthy Affiliate. I’ve connected with and chatted with countless people there who were over 40 and making a living online. It’s a great community where people are actually interested in helping you succeed. So go check them out if you want. It doesn’t cost anything to get started. If you like their services you can upgrade to premium or you can continue to use their free elements for as long as you wish.
Kevon, this is a sterling idea. I’m all too familiar with Ageist criticisms, being well over your age myself. You make great points about how younger screen generations/millennials view us and balance them with all the attributes we have that they don’t. Well done. This needs spelling out.
You seem eminently qualified and experienced to run this site! Impressive. I’d love to hear more about your work with governments. Are you able to disclose which countries you’ve worked in? And are you a linguist? If so, which languages can you offer? Is niche finding and generating business ideas your passion? If so, I’m sure you can inspire many people.
I live in Japan and have been involved in education here for 20 years. I’ve learned so much from this culture, as I’m sure you have. In my view, this makes us ideal Internet business owners. I think yo suite would be enhanced by sharing some of your past consulting experience. It would give you even more credibility.
All success and blessings to you. Keep bringing awareness to the fact that age = wisdom, compassion, and vision! We’ve lived through all the mistakes and successes already!
Hello Linden,
Thank you so much for your kind sentiments on this article. The fact remains that the online opportunity is for everyeone and it is never too late to start an online businnes at 40 or any age for that matter.
Concerning my experience. I’ve worked largely in the Americas including virtually all Caribbean countries – Barbados, Jamaica, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Antigua and Barbuda all the way down to Trinidad and Tobago. I’ve worked with Peruvian small businesses, small businesses in Grenada and Jamaica. I’m currrently in the Cayman Islands working with some individuals and small businesses here. I also have some experience with African countries including South Africa, Mozambique and the Gambia. Hope that answers your questions.
And thanks again for your kind sentiments.
Hi Kevon,
Your article on starting an online business at 40 is quite motivating, especially in debunking the age myth in entrepreneurship. The real-world examples you provided add a lot of credibility to your arguments. However, I’m a bit skeptical about the practical challenges older entrepreneurs may face, especially those less familiar with digital technology. Could you offer more info on how these individuals can overcome technological barriers? Also, are there specific industries or online business models you’d recommend for those just starting out at a later age?
Thank you for your work and sharing this perspective!
Best Regards,
Makhsud
hi Makhsud. Thank you for your comment. You do raise a valid point concerning older people and their ability to use technology. And there are a few responses I have to that as follows:
1. When it comes to building an online business the technology is a thousand times more user-friendly than years gone by. I remember in the mid 2000s when I first started dabbling and experimenting with website building I had to learn HTML code. Today, you do not need to know any type of coding. Many tools for building websites are so easy that anyone who knows how to type in some text and use a mouse can literally build a website.
2. Not only is it easier than ever before, you can also quite use artificial intelligence to build the website for you by just providing some text instructions.
3. Using the gig economy helps. With platforms like Fiverr and Upwork you can hire a freelancer to build your website for less than $100.
So technology, as a barrier to entry in online business, is quite frankly, a thing of the past.
hope that answers your question and helps in some way.
Thanks
